Introduction

The ability to counsel staff when they are facing personal problems gives managers and team leaders an added dimension to their leadership abilities. Counseling provides the 'caring' side of leadership. It is when staff know that they are 'cared for', that they are more willing to make the effort to go the extra mile when the situation at work requires it.

In addition, counseling helps staff deal with and overcome their personal problems, thus enabling them to return to productive work sooner.
